Guinea Pigs Make Great PetsPictures of Guinea Pigs

I thought you might like this article, the video and the pictures of Guinea Pigs. They are such fun to have as pets and I enjoy them when they stay over in the surgery occasionally.

Guinea pigs just love to roll around and play in their bedding. They scamper around always watchful of predators. But to keep them happy you should have the proper bedding for them. This might include paper, shavings, or straw. So let’s look at these bedding options for your pet.

Using shredded paper is an extremely cheap bedding solution. It is very soft on a guinea pig and they seem to take to it well. It is a good option because it is dust free and soaks up urine quite well. It is important that you don’t use news paper or other ink based papers. These inks can be lethal to your guinea pig.

Shavings of soft wood may be the number one option for most guinea pig owners. They come in different forms such as pellets or actual shavings. They smell nice because they are made from pine trees. They are extremely cheap to buy but they do create dust that can get messy. One tip that you should think about is to let the shavings dry out in the air before putting them in the cage. Many guinea pigs are allergic to these shavings because of their strong smells. So it is also a good idea to use them with a cage rather than an aquarium like some people do.

Straw and hay is another good option. Not only will they use it as their bedding but they will also eat it. If you didn’t know, hay is an important staple of the guinea pig diet so you are getting two great benefits from using it as bedding. Just make sure that the hay is dry and free from molds. The only problem is that it spoils easy when it becomes damp from water or urine.

Just make sure never to use sawdust, wood pulp is better, because they might breathe it in and never use hard pieces that might poke them in the eye.

Wood pulp waste that is clean and contains no chemical contaminants is a good bedding for guinea pigs.It is absorbent and comfortable for your pet and should he or she need surgery, it  won`t irritate or contaminate the wound while it is healing. Wood shavings with the same criteria do the same job.

We have used this and sometimes I get them two different bags, one with larger shavings and one with smaller and I mix them. Then I put one layer on the bottom of the cage and it does the business, keeps them clean and not smelly. It does not contain pine or cedar oils so it is a natural, biodegradable fiber. It is also good for controlling smells!

There are two periods in a year when parakeets are more sensitive. It happens when they are changing feathers. Normally that would be March and September (European climate).

This period lasts about 4 to 7 weeks. Changing feathers exhausts the bird and it is much easier for him to catch some parakeet illness.

While changing feathers the bird can get really nervous. He will sometimes nap a lot while changing feathers and he will be all fluffy with a lot of feathers falling off. As we know, these are parakeet illness symptoms but in this case there is probably nothing wrong with the bird.

At times the bird will pluck old feathers. Sometimes that can cause injuries and bleeding. You can stop the bleeding by applying light pressure to the spot with a piece of disinfected cotton.

Birds kept indoors, like the pets I am talking about, have more trouble in this period than the birds in breeding houses.

When the temperature suddenly raises (like in the fall when the heating in apartments starts), they can suddenly loose a lot of feathers. Sadly it is when they will look pretty bald.
