Give Your A Dog Pill Easily
Being a pet parent entails a lot of responsibilities to guarantee the health of the pet. One of the essential tasks a pet parent must learn is how to give the pet a pill. Giving the dog a pill is a task that must be done until the pet gets well. Pilling the dog can be a daily routine too as similar to humans, dogs benefit from vitamins and supplements as well. So how do you give a dog a pill?
Giving the dog a pill can be a big hassle especially if the dog is a sly one that would give the owner a merry chase. Pilling the dog can be a major fight as once the pill filled treat is popped into the mouth; the cunning dog would eat the treat and spit out the pill. Dogs do not know that if they take the pill, they would get well thus a pet owner has to find ways to make the task a little easier.
Some dogs would take the pill offered by the master without a fuss. Dogs though are cunning animals and it would be a simple matter to spew the pill once the master’s back is turned. To make sure that the pill was swallowed, an owner has to stay with the dog for a while.
Another method of giving the dog a pill is using the dog’s favorite treats to mask the taste of the pill. This can be done by mixing a little amount of food with the crushed pill or with the liquid medication. However, this technique can only be done if the pet is not under dietary restriction. A pet owner can take advantage of the dog’s inclination to gobble its food by hiding the pill in the dog’s favorite foods.
Sick dogs are harder to pill as they usually refuse to eat. Mixing the pill with the dog’s food would not be a good idea. The medication can be administered by placing the pill straight to the mouth of the dog. Dogs accustomed to teeth brushing would not make a fuss if the mouth is opened. You need to gently open the dog’s mouth to insert the pill at the base of the dog’s tongue. To protect your hand from being bitten by the dog, you have to make sure that the teeth are covered by the flews. Gently blow on the nose and rub the throat to encourage the dog to swallow the pill.
